Saving Your Images Digitally

The preservation of your photographic heirlooms, movies, videos and documents should include saving images in a digital format, especially prints and film from bygone eras. Let’s get started:

1st: Get Organized

Sort film, slides, prints, movies and videos by type and size. Arrange them chronologically or by subject. Organizing items in advance can result in significant savings.

2nd: Digitize

High quality images require scans at the proper resolution and size, and that’s our job. Our scanning systems can electronically digitize film, slides and almost any two dimensional media, whether you have one or one thousand. The process of digitizing film, slides and photos results in scans that can be used to make prints or can be saved on a disc or other digital storage device.

3rd: Save

Once we have scanned your images we can print them, or save them to CD, USB thumb drive or portable hard drive; or we can transmit them to you over the internet. While we are on the subject, PLEASE take time to save the digital photos that you have on your smart phones, digital cameras and computers on at least two other devices. All digital storage, even the cloud, has a finite life - experts say 5 to 15 years at the most, so be prepared to convert your images to the next generation of formats and devices. Experts agree that the safest way to preserve images for the next generation is to make high quality prints.

4th: Share and Enjoy!

GENERAL SCANNING NOTES:

  • Automatic dust & scratch removal included with scans of color negative film

    (not available for B&W film).
  • Scans are created in sRGB or RGB color space.
  • Scanners do not “see” images the same as the human eye perceives them,

so many scans require file preparation before printing.
  • See “Film Processing” card for actual sizes and descriptions of film formats.
  • Images on file will not be copied, printed or released to a third party without

the consent of the owner of the original image.
  • Images saved on the lab network are subject to purging or other loss due to

unforeseen technical difficulties. We highly recommend that customers order

CD backups of scanned or manipulated files at the time the order is placed.

The standard 35mm slide

35mm has been around since the 1930s and comes in a variety of cardboard and plastic mounts. Standard scans from 35mm are not cropped.

NOTES:

35mm half frame slides can also be priced as standard scans but will have black margins on all four sides.

All 35mm film is scanned lengthwise. Images that were composed vertically will need to be rotated after scanning.

The “plus” size slide

The 828 format looks like 35mm, but is 35mm height without sprocket holes. At 35mm prices, the image is cropped slightly on all four sides. For uncropped scans use Vintage Film prices.

Vintage: 110 & 126 size slides

110 and 126 preloaded film cartridges were designed for Kodak’s easy-to-use Instamatic cameras. 110 slides in 2x2 mounts can be scanned like 35mm in our high speed scanner, but the image will be much smaller, centered on a black background.

Vintage: 127 “super” slide

Similar to 120 film, 127 is smaller and came in many image proportions, the most popular being square. Super slides were popular for souvenir slides at tourist attractions from the 1940s through the 1970s
